Yellow jackets are sworn enemies of mine. They always seemed to aggravate and pester me as a kid, especially when I was outside enjoying some crabs during the summer.

Get rid of yellow jackets by making your area less is to keep pet food and other sources of refined proteins indoors. Yellow jackets, like other wasps, really do enjoy protein, and nothing is packed with more accessible proteins than pet food floating around in a water dish. So, keep your dog’s or cat’s food bowl inside during the warmer months, or find a way to protect that pet food from foraging pests like yellow jackets and other scavenging wasps. |
| Keep your garbage cans properly sealed. Garbage bins are not only a favorite target for stray dogs, stray cats, and raccoons, but they are also a favorite of yellow jackets, who will feed on the leftover proteins and sugars found in human trash. Yellow jackets especially love pieces of meat, 2-liter soda bottles, syrup, and fruit.

Make sure awning and siding is properly sealed to get rid of yellow jackets. Prevent yellow jackets from gaining entrance to the spaces in the siding and roofing of your home and building nests in your home. Hidden wasp nests are very difficult to remove and may require the services of a pest control professional, but this can be expensive. You may try throwing boiling water on the nests but be very careful because yellow jackets bite AND sting! Cold weather will eventually kill the colony, and then you can seal the entrance without driving wasps into your home. |

Attracters of yellow jackets: soda cans, humming bird feeders, sugars, proteins, and in this case, apples. These things should be away from your area or should be sealed in such a way as to prevent yellow jackets from gaining access to the sugar. According to studies, yellow jacket populations with access to large amounts of refined sugars grow far more rapidly than colonies who only have access to their natural diet of nectar and live prey. When outside, especially in the summertime, keep a lid on your drinks and check them first for yellow jackets!!!! |

Mechanical, non-toxic traps are a good way to get rid of yellow jackets. Yellow jacket traps should be put out during the earlier months of the warm season. You want to set the traps before the queens begin their search for nesting grounds. You will be able to prevent the creation of a whole yellow jacket colony by killing just one yellow jacket queen. Traps set during the first few weeks of summer still should keep yellow jacket populations at a manageable level. |

The image on the left is a perfect example of the solitary wasp. The solitary wasp usually has a very long, thin body and waist; are not particularly colorful; and are usually quite docile. They are not very territorial and will rarely sting humans. They are not considered pests, but they are considered beneficial insects in the economic and gardening sense, seeing as how they tend to prey on garden pests like aphids and beetles. To get rid of solitary wasps, simply have a spray bottle filled with citrus oil extract on hand. Citrus oil extract kills wasps on contact. |

This picture shows a paper wasp and its nest. As you can see, paper wasps construct nests made of a papery material. Paper wasps are beneficial insects and are therefore only deemed pests if they build a nest near humans. Otherwise, the paper wasp is one of the most harmless species of social wasp, and it’s a real treat to watch them build those amazing nests. The safest way to get rid of paper wasps is to purchase a can of pressurized wasp killer and spray the nest in a sweeping motion during the night. |

Hornets look very fearsome due to their size, but they aren't out of trouble. Hornets are territorial but are far less aggressive than the yellow jacket. The bald-faced hornet (left) is the most common hornet wasp in the U.S. To get rid of hornets, you should use a can of pressurized wasp killer to spray the nest from a distance during the evening. Be sure to have a flashlight so you can see the nest entrance. Read all about how to get rid of hornets. |

Here is a picture of a yellow jacket wasp. Yellow jackets are easy to identify due to their thick waists and bright yellow patterns. Yellow jacket wasps are extremely territorial and aggressive social wasps. They will defend their nests to the bitter end, biting and stinging their way into the next life, often injecting several doses of poison before being wiped away or killed. Of all the wasps, the yellow jacket is considered to be the only “pest” in the family. This means you'll definitely want to know best how to get rid of yellow jackets. |

Some household pests are simply annoying, but others can do some serious damage. Termites can do extreme damage to human property. They eat away at wood and can ruin your house's framing structure. The best way to fight termites is to prevent them from coming in the first place. Once they are already there, however, there are still some steps you can take to get rid of them and save your home. |
|
Identifying termites presence should start with a little looking around. You may notice rotted or damaged wood. You may also see the termites during warmer months when they come out of the wood. You may not actually be able to see damage, so tapping or drilling with a probe of some sort on the suspected infested area can help you to find hollow spots where termites have been. Once you have confirmed you have termites you need to get to work at getting rid of them. It is best to have a professional take care of getting rid of them. However, there are some things you can do to help. Fixing outside faucets that are worn out or leaky will help to keep moisture spots away, which provide ample ground for termites to live. Additionally, clean and repair gutters to help keep moisture away from your house. Stack firewood or other wood products off the ground. Fill in cracks or other openings on the outside of your home. |
|
| Your combined efforts are the best way to get termites out of your home for good. You may consider consulting a professional exterminator if your termite problems are extremely serious. Once the termites are gone you will need to repair any damage that they may have done, but you can expect to be free from termites for at least five years after the professional extermination. | |
