There are so many variety out there of this pest that it is very hard to identify different ones. There are some gnats which are fairly harmless and do not bite. But there is a large group of gnats like, black fly, eye gnat, ‘No-See-Um’, and midget and even more which bites humans. These are the ones which are very problematic |
| Gnats are usually attracted to wet and rotten areas. You are more likely to see these around fruits. Peels of Orange and Banana are its favorites. If you see lots of gnats flying around at home, it is very likely that they have laid eggs somewhere in the house. The life spans of these gnats are only few months but when they lay eggs, they lay in hundreds, so there is never a scarcity for these species. | |

It is always in the best interest to keep your home clean including the garbage area. Better to keep the fruits in the refrigerator or in meshed bags. Fly net is a good measure to keep these gnats at bay. But the usual nets that you use will not be sufficient here as ‘no-see-um’ gnats are found to be very small. They can get in through the usual window nets. You have to get fine woven screens to keep these gnats away. |

There is another variety called ‘fungus gnats’ which are usually found near watery areas. If you have indoor plants at home, there is a very good chance of finding these in your pots. They like the decompose materials that you put in for the plants as fertilizers. It’s better to take care not to over water these plants and always keeping the soil dry in the pots. |
