Fruit flies, as their name suggests, like rotting fruits and vegetables. Fruit flies are attracted to, and will lay their eggs in, almost any form of moist decaying organic matter. Incredibly, fruit flies can lay more than 500 eggs at a time. So it's easy to see how swarms of fruit flies can appear in your home virtually overnight and, if not taken care of immediately, can rapidly increase their numbers exponentially. Although fruit flies are a year-round problem, they tend to be worst in late summer and early fall. The following are the steps you need to take to get rid of fruit flies for good. |

Find and remove all food-based breeding grounds. Start in the kitchen by disposing of any overripe or rotten fruits or vegetables. You should cover fruit bowls or put them in the refrigerator. Wash all dirty dishes. Fruit flies will lay eggs on dirty plates and in dirty glasses. Search through every cupboard and check for wet or infested grains, crackers, potatoes, pastas, beans, etc. If it looks questionable, get rid of it. Remove all garbage from the home immediately. Clean out dirty trashcans in the house. Search the entire house for other food messes. Be sure to look in your kids' rooms. Look under beds and in closets for dirty dishes. Wash all sponges, dish rags, and towels. Sweep and mop, dump the mop water, clean out the bucket, and wash the mop head. |

Find and remove all other breeding grounds. Once you have disposed of all their favorite food sources, fruit flies will be forced to find others. You will need to find and eliminate these sources also. If you have a dishwasher, clean it. Clean it inside and out and remove all food and excess liquid. You will want to wash all dishes by hand until the fruit fly infestation is gone. Clean under the stove and oven. Clean the seals on the fridge and freezer doors. Because fruit flies will eat nectar and because they like the moisture in soil, potted plants and flowers should be taken outside. Check under your sinks for drips and rotten wood. Clean drains and garbage disposals. Remove any wet lint around and under the washing machine. |

Store food properly. Now that you have removed the rotting messes of food from your home, now you want to protect the good food. Buy some good canisters, cans, or plastic storage containers with tight-fitting lids for food products like grains, pastas, cereals, beans, peas, flour, crackers, and anything else that might attract fruit flies if it gets damp. To be safe, put all food items in a container. Be sure to also buy a garbage can with a tight-fitting lid.

Take fruit fly prevention measures. Now that you have taken ste steps to remove fruit flies from your home, you need to take the steps to keep them from getting in again. First, start keeping your outside trash cans as far from the house as possible. Cover with yard waste or remove any compost piles that you throw food waste in. Patch any holes in window screens. Keep doors closed. Search for and fill any cracks around doors and windows. |
| You gotten rid of the fruit flies! Now set a timer to be sure they don't come back. Just because you're no longer seeing any evidence of fruit flies does not mean that there aren't still fruit fly eggs that remain in the house. It can take anywhere from 7 to 14 days for fruit flies to move from egg to adult. So, don't start celebrating until at least two weeks have passed. In the meantime, continue to keep the home clean and unattractive to fruit flies. After two weeks have gone by with no sign of fruit flies, celebrate! | |
How to Kill Fruit Flies with Commercial Products
![]() Buy the Springstar Glass Fruit Fly Trap |
Because fruit flies are so common, there are a number of different products on the market for killing fruit flies. Probably the most common of these products is fruit fly traps. Most of these are small units filled with sticky stuff and an attractant like vinegar or fruit scent. Fruit fly traps can be placed almost anywhere. Two great traps are the Springstar Kitchen Fruit Fly Trap and the Springstar Glass Fruit Fly Trap. There are also fruit fly lures that work with the fruit fly trap to attract the fruit flies even more effectively. And, of course, you can't forget about good, old-fashioned fly strips. If you're looking for something to spray the flies in flight, you should get fly repellent spray. If you're looking for something to dump down the drain to kill fruit flies, I would suggest Liquid Plumr Drain Cleaner Gel. |
