| If you see a bumble bee that has a predominantly black abdomen, it may in fact be a carpenter bee. Carpenter bees are very similar to bumble bees in appearance. The most noticeable difference is that bumble bees have black abdomens covered with yellow hairs, and carpenter bees do not have the yellow hairs. | |||

A Honeybee/Bumblebee |
A Carpenter Bee | ||
| A carpenter bee infestation is most often indicated by mounds of saw dust on the ground beneath an awning. Other signs are yellow-brown feces that tend to accumulate on the walls near a carpenter bee nest. You may also notice constant noise by a group of bees that don’t bother ever seem to want to sting you. A serious carpenter bee infestation can evidenced by the wood that they have poked with many holes in which to dig their burrows. Below is some practical advice about how to get rid of carpenter bees and how to keep carpenter bees away for good. | |||
Carpenter Bee Control |
| Plug the carpenter bee entrances with caulk or putty. For whatever reason, carpenter bees will not try to get out of the nest if they’re trapped inside. Many people simply caulk or putty the entrance holes to carpenter bee nests and then simply paint over them. This will save you time and money. | ![]() |
| Another way to get rid of carpenter bees is to agitate the bees and then use a vacuum to suck them up. This can only be accomplished if the nest is relatively new, and only in the early evening when the bees have returned to the nest and are relatively slow. A new colony will sometimes consist of only 20 or so bees, with one queen. If you notice that the colony is relatively small, you may want to consider waiting outside of the nest with a vacuum cleaner while poking the nest with a stick. Be sure to cover your body with clothing like sweatpants, thick sweats, gloves, and a face mask if you feel the need. Carpenter bees will sting if agitated, but only the females have stingers. |

Any bee killer spray such as those offered by Raid can be used to get rid of carpenter bees. This is the most common method of carpenter bee control. As with any other bee infestation you should take steps to ensure that you are properly dressed when spraying bees. Make sure that it is late enough in the evening because that is when the bees are sure to be home and are at their slowest. Once you are sure all or most of the bees are in the nest, spray a long stream into the nest and wait to see if any bees come out. Continue spraying until the bees are dead or gone away. |
| Once you have killed the bees, make sure you keep them away by replacing the wood or covering the damage with putty. Cover the entrance holes in the wood with putty so other bees don’t decide to move in. If you want, you can replace any wood the carpenter bees have damaged— and read the nest set of advice very carefully and take heed… | ||
| To make sure carpenter bees don’t invade the outside of your home again, either install vinyl siding or have your home painted regularly. Vinyl siding (or any other non-wood siding) really is the only way you’re going to ensure that carpenter bees don’t damage your home. Note: Wood stain won’t stop carpenter bees. |

| Killing Bees with Bee Spray VERSUS Killing Bees with Boric Acid |
Almost every time I or others have had to get rid of bees, it was done with Raid. However, there are other ways to get rid of bees. Boric acid (also known as borax, often sold as a fine powder) is a slow but certain remedy for killing bees that have made a nest in your siding. The reason for using borax dust is because sprays may not reach the hive if they’ve built the nest far enough into the wall. Borax works with bees much the same way it works with getting rid of ants. The bees get the dust on themselves, and they bring it back into the nest with them, eventually poisoning the entire colony. See boric acid products. |

Drain flies, also known as moth flies and sewer gnats, really look a lot like moths. They are even dusty and hard-of-flying like moths. But drain flies are actually flies. Although they may be "cute", if you've seen one drain fly, there is a huge chance that a few hundred more drain flies are either close by or they will be shortly. Drain flies are very commonly mistaken for fruit flies. Both are small, hang out in groups, and pester people endlessly.
Drain flies, when they are in the house, most commonly lay their eggs in the organic matter that builds up in your drain pipes such as hair, grease, food, sludge, etc. When the 10 – 200 drain fly eggs hatch, most times within 48 hours, the drain fly larvae live in and eat that organic matter for somewhere between 9 and 15 days before emerging as adults. Adult drain flies are most active in the evening. During the day, drain flies spend most of their time hanging out on walls and other flat surfaces, which makes them very easy to kill. A drain fly leaves a powdery stain on the wall that it's been killed on so you will need to wipe the residue up. Adult drain flies usually live for close to two weeks. Do not think that your drain fly problem is gone just because the adults have died off or you've killed them all.
If measures are not taken to get rid of drain fly larvae and drain fly breeding grounds, you will never be rid of them.
How to Kill Drain Flies in the Drain |
Buy Scotch Tape to cover drains to test presence of drain flies |
First, find out where the drain flies are coming from. This is usually pretty easy. If you see a drain fly, there's a good chance that they're coming from the nearest drain. To find out for sure, grab a piece of tape, lay it sticky side down covering about ¾ of the drain in question, and continue checking it for the next few days. If they are coming from that drain, there should be flies stuck to the tape. |
Buy Pipe Snake to clear pipes of organic matter that drain flies breed in. |
Remove the breeding grounds of the drain flies. First, remove and clean the hair catcher if you use one. Then, buy a pipe brush and a plumbing snake and get to work. Your main goal is to remove material from the drains in your home so that the drain flies have nothing to lay eggs in. Use the pipe brush to do what you can to clean the sides of the pipe off. Then, use the snake to pull out any clumps of hair or anything else you can get to. Do a thorough job. You can expect to get dirty because it tends to be a messy job cleaning out drains. |
Buy Drain Cleaner to fully clear drains of material that drain flies live and breed in. |
Buy a drain cleaner. It will be very difficult for you, even with the snake, to get all of the organic matter out of your pipes. This is why you should buy a bottle or two of drain cleaner. This should get most of the rest of the gunk out of your pipes. Follow the instructions on the packaging carefully and allow the stuff to work for the maximum amount of time. You may need to use the drain cleaner several times to get all of the gunk out of the drain. |
Buy a Plunger to further clear drains of matter that drain flies live and breed in. |
Now you need to do some plunging. You need to do everything you can to get every last bit of organic matter out of the drain. First, before plunging, run lots and lots of water down the drain to make sure that you've flushed down all of the drain cleaner. You don't want to get splattered with any caustic chemicals while you are plunging the drain. Run some water and plunge the drain for several minutes. When you're done plunging pour a huge pot full of boiling water down the drain. Be careful not to burn yourself! |
| Do some basic maintenance to avoid recurrence. The most important thing you can do is to clean your drains at least once a month. I know it sounds tedious, but you should really do it. Also, if you have a garbage disposal, run it briefly every day. Take your garbage out on a regular basis and keep the can clean. Keep the kitchen clean, too. Don't risk leaving food on plates for long periods of time. Check the water trays under house plants and drain them after watering plants. Patch holes in window screens, and don't leave the doors open. Re-grout tiles in the shower and on the floor. Keep the caulking around the drain clean, as they like to lay eggs there, too. Make sure there isn't any wet lint under the washer. | |

If you have a fruit fly infestation problem, you need to be sure to take the proper steps to remove them from the premises. These steps include removing their breeding grounds, taking proper storage measures for food in your house, and finally removing the fruit flies and preventing them from re-entering your areas. |
![]() |
Fruit flies, as their name suggests, like rotting fruits and vegetables. Fruit flies are attracted to, and will lay their eggs in, almost any form of moist decaying organic matter. Incredibly, fruit flies can lay more than 500 eggs at a time. So it's easy to see how swarms of fruit flies can appear in your home virtually overnight and, if not taken care of immediately, can rapidly increase their numbers exponentially. Although fruit flies are a year-round problem, they tend to be worst in late summer and early fall. The following are the steps you need to take to get rid of fruit flies for good. |
Fruit Fly Control |
![]() |
Find and remove all food-based breeding grounds. Start in the kitchen by disposing of any overripe or rotten fruits or vegetables. You should cover fruit bowls or put them in the refrigerator. Wash all dirty dishes. Fruit flies will lay eggs on dirty plates and in dirty glasses. Search through every cupboard and check for wet or infested grains, crackers, potatoes, pastas, beans, etc. If it looks questionable, get rid of it. Remove all garbage from the home immediately. Clean out dirty trashcans in the house. Search the entire house for other food messes. Be sure to look in your kids' rooms. Look under beds and in closets for dirty dishes. Wash all sponges, dish rags, and towels. Sweep and mop, dump the mop water, clean out the bucket, and wash the mop head. |
![]() |
Find and remove all other breeding grounds. Once you have disposed of all their favorite food sources, fruit flies will be forced to find others. You will need to find and eliminate these sources also. If you have a dishwasher, clean it. Clean it inside and out and remove all food and excess liquid. You will want to wash all dishes by hand until the fruit fly infestation is gone. Clean under the stove and oven. Clean the seals on the fridge and freezer doors. Because fruit flies will eat nectar and because they like the moisture in soil, potted plants and flowers should be taken outside. Check under your sinks for drips and rotten wood. Clean drains and garbage disposals. Remove any wet lint around and under the washing machine. |
![]() |
Store food properly. Now that you have removed the rotting messes of food from your home, now you want to protect the good food. Buy some good canisters, cans, or plastic storage containers with tight-fitting lids for food products like grains, pastas, cereals, beans, peas, flour, crackers, and anything else that might attract fruit flies if it gets damp. To be safe, put all food items in a container. Be sure to also buy a garbage can with a tight-fitting lid.
![]() |
Take fruit fly prevention measures. Now that you have taken ste steps to remove fruit flies from your home, you need to take the steps to keep them from getting in again. First, start keeping your outside trash cans as far from the house as possible. Cover with yard waste or remove any compost piles that you throw food waste in. Patch any holes in window screens. Keep doors closed. Search for and fill any cracks around doors and windows. |
| You gotten rid of the fruit flies! Now set a timer to be sure they don't come back. Just because you're no longer seeing any evidence of fruit flies does not mean that there aren't still fruit fly eggs that remain in the house. It can take anywhere from 7 to 14 days for fruit flies to move from egg to adult. So, don't start celebrating until at least two weeks have passed. In the meantime, continue to keep the home clean and unattractive to fruit flies. After two weeks have gone by with no sign of fruit flies, celebrate! | |
How to Kill Fruit Flies with Commercial Products
![]() Buy the Springstar Glass Fruit Fly Trap |
Because fruit flies are so common, there are a number of different products on the market for killing fruit flies. Probably the most common of these products is fruit fly traps. Most of these are small units filled with sticky stuff and an attractant like vinegar or fruit scent. Fruit fly traps can be placed almost anywhere. Two great traps are the Springstar Kitchen Fruit Fly Trap and the Springstar Glass Fruit Fly Trap. There are also fruit fly lures that work with the fruit fly trap to attract the fruit flies even more effectively. And, of course, you can't forget about good, old-fashioned fly strips. If you're looking for something to spray the flies in flight, you should get fly repellent spray. If you're looking for something to dump down the drain to kill fruit flies, I would suggest Liquid Plumr Drain Cleaner Gel. |

Yellow jackets are sworn enemies of mine. They always seemed to aggravate and pester me as a kid, especially when I was outside enjoying some crabs during the summer.
Get rid of yellow jackets by making your area less is to keep pet food and other sources of refined proteins indoors. Yellow jackets, like other wasps, really do enjoy protein, and nothing is packed with more accessible proteins than pet food floating around in a water dish. So, keep your dog’s or cat’s food bowl inside during the warmer months, or find a way to protect that pet food from foraging pests like yellow jackets and other scavenging wasps. |
| Keep your garbage cans properly sealed. Garbage bins are not only a favorite target for stray dogs, stray cats, and raccoons, but they are also a favorite of yellow jackets, who will feed on the leftover proteins and sugars found in human trash. Yellow jackets especially love pieces of meat, 2-liter soda bottles, syrup, and fruit.
Make sure awning and siding is properly sealed to get rid of yellow jackets. Prevent yellow jackets from gaining entrance to the spaces in the siding and roofing of your home and building nests in your home. Hidden wasp nests are very difficult to remove and may require the services of a pest control professional, but this can be expensive. You may try throwing boiling water on the nests but be very careful because yellow jackets bite AND sting! Cold weather will eventually kill the colony, and then you can seal the entrance without driving wasps into your home. |
Attracters of yellow jackets: soda cans, humming bird feeders, sugars, proteins, and in this case, apples. These things should be away from your area or should be sealed in such a way as to prevent yellow jackets from gaining access to the sugar. According to studies, yellow jacket populations with access to large amounts of refined sugars grow far more rapidly than colonies who only have access to their natural diet of nectar and live prey. When outside, especially in the summertime, keep a lid on your drinks and check them first for yellow jackets!!!! |
Mechanical, non-toxic traps are a good way to get rid of yellow jackets. Yellow jacket traps should be put out during the earlier months of the warm season. You want to set the traps before the queens begin their search for nesting grounds. You will be able to prevent the creation of a whole yellow jacket colony by killing just one yellow jacket queen. Traps set during the first few weeks of summer still should keep yellow jacket populations at a manageable level. |

The image on the left is a perfect example of the solitary wasp. The solitary wasp usually has a very long, thin body and waist; are not particularly colorful; and are usually quite docile. They are not very territorial and will rarely sting humans. They are not considered pests, but they are considered beneficial insects in the economic and gardening sense, seeing as how they tend to prey on garden pests like aphids and beetles. To get rid of solitary wasps, simply have a spray bottle filled with citrus oil extract on hand. Citrus oil extract kills wasps on contact. |

This picture shows a paper wasp and its nest. As you can see, paper wasps construct nests made of a papery material. Paper wasps are beneficial insects and are therefore only deemed pests if they build a nest near humans. Otherwise, the paper wasp is one of the most harmless species of social wasp, and it’s a real treat to watch them build those amazing nests. The safest way to get rid of paper wasps is to purchase a can of pressurized wasp killer and spray the nest in a sweeping motion during the night. |

Hornets look very fearsome due to their size, but they aren't out of trouble. Hornets are territorial but are far less aggressive than the yellow jacket. The bald-faced hornet (left) is the most common hornet wasp in the U.S. To get rid of hornets, you should use a can of pressurized wasp killer to spray the nest from a distance during the evening. Be sure to have a flashlight so you can see the nest entrance. Read all about how to get rid of hornets. |

Here is a picture of a yellow jacket wasp. Yellow jackets are easy to identify due to their thick waists and bright yellow patterns. Yellow jacket wasps are extremely territorial and aggressive social wasps. They will defend their nests to the bitter end, biting and stinging their way into the next life, often injecting several doses of poison before being wiped away or killed. Of all the wasps, the yellow jacket is considered to be the only “pest” in the family. This means you'll definitely want to know best how to get rid of yellow jackets. |

Some household pests are simply annoying, but others can do some serious damage. Termites can do extreme damage to human property. They eat away at wood and can ruin your house's framing structure. The best way to fight termites is to prevent them from coming in the first place. Once they are already there, however, there are still some steps you can take to get rid of them and save your home. |
Identifying termites presence should start with a little looking around. You may notice rotted or damaged wood. You may also see the termites during warmer months when they come out of the wood. You may not actually be able to see damage, so tapping or drilling with a probe of some sort on the suspected infested area can help you to find hollow spots where termites have been. Once you have confirmed you have termites you need to get to work at getting rid of them. It is best to have a professional take care of getting rid of them. However, there are some things you can do to help. Fixing outside faucets that are worn out or leaky will help to keep moisture spots away, which provide ample ground for termites to live. Additionally, clean and repair gutters to help keep moisture away from your house. Stack firewood or other wood products off the ground. Fill in cracks or other openings on the outside of your home. |
| Your combined efforts are the best way to get termites out of your home for good. You may consider consulting a professional exterminator if your termite problems are extremely serious. Once the termites are gone you will need to repair any damage that they may have done, but you can expect to be free from termites for at least five years after the professional extermination. | |
